How to Read Clothing Labels: Which Fabrics Are Plastic and Which Aren’t?
Quick answer: Polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane are synthetic plastic fibres, usually made from fossil-fuel-derived polymers. Cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk are natural fibres. Viscose, rayon, modal and lyocell begin as plant cellulose but are chemically transformed into manufactured fibres, so they are neither conventional plastic nor completely natural in the way cotton or linen is.
Most of us glance at a clothing label only when something needs washing.
We look for the temperature, check whether it can go in the dryer, and perhaps notice where the garment was made. The fibre composition, the small line that says “92% polyester, 8% elastane” or “55% linen, 45% viscose”, is easy to overlook.
But that line tells you far more about the garment than the words printed on the swing tag.
It tells you whether the fabric is primarily plant-based, animal-derived, regenerated from cellulose or made from plastic. It can help explain why a garment traps heat, stretches, pills, holds odour, sheds fibres, dries quickly or cannot easily be recycled.
It can also expose a growing contradiction in modern fashion. A dress may be marketed as soft, airy and inspired by nature while being made almost entirely from polyester. A jumper may be described as “wool-touch” while containing no wool. A product promoted as recycled may be made from old plastic bottles that have been turned into clothing, rather than from discarded clothes.
The clothing label is not the whole story, but it is one of the few places where marketing language has to give way to actual material composition.
The first line to read on every clothing label
Ignore the care symbols for a moment and look for the fibre composition. It may say:

For textile products made from several fibres, the label generally lists the constituent fibres and their percentages by weight, usually in descending order. This means the first fibre is normally the main material in the garment.
A label reading “70% polyester, 30% cotton” is therefore a predominantly plastic garment with some cotton added. It should not be thought of as a cotton item simply because cotton is the more familiar or appealing word.
Likewise, “95% cotton, 5% elastane” is mainly cotton, but the stretch fibre may still affect how the garment behaves, sheds, wears out and is processed at end of life.
Labels do not normally tell you:

Is polyester plastic?
Yes. Polyester is the most widely used synthetic fibre in modern clothing and is generally made from the same broad polymer family used in PET drinks bottles.
Manufacturers favour it because it is cheap, consistent, strong and easy to blend. It can be made into smooth satin-like dresses, fuzzy fleece, crisp school shirts or stretchy gymwear depending on the yarn and fabric construction.
This versatility is one reason polyester appears in both very cheap and very expensive clothing.
Is nylon plastic?
Yes. Nylon is a synthetic polyamide and therefore a plastic fibre.
It is valued for strength, abrasion resistance and smoothness, which is why it appears in tights, swimwear, technical jackets and underwear.
Is acrylic fabric plastic?
Yes. Acrylic is a synthetic plastic fibre commonly used as an inexpensive substitute for wool.
It can feel soft and warm when new, but lower-quality acrylic garments may pill heavily and lose their appearance quickly.
Is elastane plastic?
Yes. Elastane—also known in some markets by names such as spandex—is a synthetic plastic fibre engineered to stretch and recover.
A garment does not need to be mostly elastane for the fibre to change how it behaves. Even two or three per cent can make jeans stretchier, socks stay up and T-shirts fit more closely.

Natural does not automatically mean low-impact, non-toxic or ethically produced.
Cotton can involve intensive irrigation and pesticide use. Wool can be treated with chemicals and linked to animal-welfare concerns. Silk processing has its own ethical issues. Dyeing and finishing can add chemicals to any fibre, including natural ones.
But natural fibres differ from polyester, nylon and acrylic in one important way: the fibre itself is not a persistent fossil-plastic polymer.
Where do viscose, modal and lyocell fit?
This is where clothing labels become less straightforward.
Viscose, rayon, modal and lyocell are known as manufactured cellulosic fibres. They usually begin with cellulose from trees or other plants, which is dissolved and chemically regenerated into fibre.
They are not conventional plastic fibres like polyester. But they are also not simply spun straight from a plant in the way cotton, linen or hemp is.

These fabrics are often soft, drapey and breathable. They can be useful alternatives to polyester in dresses, blouses and linings.
However, vague language such as “bamboo fabric” can be misleading. In many cases, bamboo has been dissolved and regenerated into viscose. The finished textile is not simply woven bamboo fibre.
A plant origin does not remove the need to ask how the fibre was processed.
What fabric percentages really mean
Clothing blends are rarely accidental.
Brands combine fibres to achieve a particular price, feel, appearance or performance.
A cotton-polyester shirt may wrinkle less and dry faster than a pure cotton shirt. A wool-acrylic jumper may cost less and feel lighter. Linen blended with viscose may drape more fluidly. A small amount of elastane can make fitted trousers more forgiving.
But blends come with trade-offs.
70% polyester, 30% cotton
This is mainly a synthetic plastic garment. The cotton may improve softness and moisture absorption, but the majority fibre remains polyester.
95% cotton, 5% elastane
This is mainly cotton and may be a practical choice for fitted garments. However, the elastane can make the fabric harder to recycle and means the item is not entirely plastic-free.
50% wool, 50% acrylic
Half the garment is animal fibre and half is plastic. It may be cheaper than pure wool but can pill differently and will not behave like an entirely wool garment.
55% linen, 45% viscose
This contains no conventional synthetic plastic fibre, although the viscose is a chemically regenerated material. The blend may feel softer and less crisp than pure linen.
100% does not automatically mean best
A single-fibre garment is often easier to understand and may be easier to recycle, but quality still matters.
A poorly constructed 100% cotton T-shirt that loses its shape after a few washes may be less useful than a durable cotton garment with a small amount of elastane that is worn for years.
Longevity, construction and actual use matter alongside fibre composition.
Why a small amount of elastane matters
Elastane is often treated as an insignificant addition because it appears in small percentages.
But it can affect:

how easily the garment can be mechanically recycled;

whether it stretches out or recovers;

how it responds to heat;

how quickly it degrades;

and whether the fabric can biodegrade as a single natural material.
This does not mean every garment containing elastane should be avoided.
For underwear, swimwear, bras, socks and fitted trousers, stretch may be central to comfort and function. The more useful question is whether the elastane is necessary and whether the garment is sufficiently well made to justify the mixed material.
A loose T-shirt may not need elastane. A supportive sports bra probably does.
Does recycled polyester solve the problem?
Recycled polyester can reduce demand for virgin fossil feedstocks and give an existing plastic material another use.
However, it remains polyester.
The finished fibre can still shed synthetic microfibres during manufacturing, wearing and washing. A polyester garment can also remain difficult to recycle again, especially when blended with elastane, cotton or other fibres.
Much recycled polyester used in fashion has historically come from plastic bottles rather than old clothing. Turning a bottle into fabric may interrupt a bottle-to-bottle recycling loop and create a textile that is less likely to be recycled at the end of its life.
Recycled content can therefore be an improvement within a synthetic product, but it does not transform polyester into a natural or biodegradable fibre.
“Made from recycled bottles” means the plastic has changed shape. It does not mean the plastic has disappeared.
What words such as breathable and moisture-wicking leave out
Front-of-garment claims describe performance, not necessarily composition.
Breathable
This may refer to fabric construction, ventilation or moisture movement. Both natural and synthetic fabrics can be designed to feel breathable.
Moisture-wicking
This usually means the fabric moves sweat away from the skin towards the outer surface, where it can evaporate. Polyester and nylon are often used because they absorb relatively little water and dry quickly.
Odour-control
This may indicate an antimicrobial treatment, a fibre technology or a fabric designed to dry quickly. The label may not name the treatment used.
Easy-care or non-iron
This can describe the inherent behaviour of a synthetic fibre or a chemical finishing treatment added to a natural fabric.
Water-resistant
This may come from a tightly woven fabric, a membrane, a polyurethane coating or a durable water-repellent finish.
These words are not meaningless, but they do not replace the fibre label or a clear explanation of chemical finishes.
Can you tell whether a fabric is plastic by touching it?
Not reliably.
Modern manufacturing can make polyester feel like silk, cotton, suede, wool or fleece.
Viscose can feel cooler and more fluid than cotton. Acrylic can imitate wool. Blended fibres can disguise one another.
Clues such as static, shine, pilling or a very smooth surface may suggest synthetic content, but they are not proof.
The only reliable starting point is the composition label.

There is no perfect fibre for every garment, climate, budget or body.
A practical hierarchy is more useful than a rigid blacklist.
First: wear what you already own
The garment already in your wardrobe has already been manufactured. Extending its useful life is usually better than replacing it simply because the label contains polyester.
Second: buy fewer garments
Material choice matters, but it cannot compensate for extreme volume. Five “better fabric” garments bought unnecessarily still require more resources than one garment worn repeatedly.
Third: favour simpler compositions
Where two items perform equally well, a single-material garment is easier to understand and may be easier to repair or recycle than a complicated blend.
Fourth: choose the fibre for the job
Linen may be excellent for a summer shirt but unsuitable for a supportive swimsuit. Wool may regulate temperature beautifully but require specialist care. Natural rubber or a small amount of elastane may be useful where stretch is essential.
Fifth: consider certification and traceability
Organic, recycled, responsibly sourced and certified claims vary in meaning. Look for recognised standards and enough information to understand exactly what has been certified.

What fibre labels reveal about fast fashion
Fast fashion depends on more than low wages and rapid trend cycles.
It also depends on cheap, abundant and highly adaptable materials.
Polyester is well suited to that model. It can be produced consistently at enormous scale, dyed in bright colours, shaped into many textures and sold at a lower price than many natural fibres.
This helps explain how brands can release thousands of new styles quickly and at prices that encourage impulse buying.

Why an expensive label does not guarantee a better fabric
Price can reflect design, branding, tailoring, retail costs or exclusivity. It does not necessarily reflect natural fibre content or easier end-of-life recycling.

The bottom line
A clothing label cannot tell you whether a garment was made fairly, dyed responsibly or designed to last.
But it can tell you whether the fabric is primarily cotton, wool, cellulose or plastic—and that is information worth using.
Start with four names: polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane. When they dominate the composition, you are looking at a predominantly plastic garment.
